Weekly News Round-Up

It’s been an eventful week in the movie world to say the least. It all started with one of the most calamitous errors in awards history at the Oscars on Sunday night – here’s a round up of all the major news in the movie business this week:

The 2017 Academy Awards…and THAT Mix-up

Where else to start than in Hollywood, Sunday night. The Oscars. One of the most prestigious awards ceremonies in the world. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway are standing on stage, ready to announce the winner of Best Picture – only to read out the WRONG winner.

It wasn’t the only error to be made however. Whilst reflecting on the movie heads who we have lost in the last year, producer Jan Chapman (who is very much alive and well) was left mortified when her picture accompanied costume designer, Janet Patterson, who died in October last year. Oops

After all the calamity of the night, Moonlight eventually took home the prize for Best Picture ahead of the favourite La La Land. Click here to find out all other winners on the night.

Bill Paxton

Before the Oscars ceremony on Sunday night, the movie world was left devastated by the news that Aliens and Apollo 13 actor, Bill Paxton, passed away at the age of 61.

Paxton also starred in Near Dark, True Lies, Titanic and alongside Helen Hunt in 1996’s Twister. More recently he featured in 2 Guns, Edge of Tomorrow and Nightcrawler.

Logan and the End of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine

The release of Logan on Wednesday was greeted with a positive response, and it needed to be as Jackman bids farewell to the scratchy mutant.

Patrick Stewart also confirmed that Logan would be his final X-Men movie as Charles Xavier, ending an era for the franchise.

Movie News in Short

Vera Farmiga has joined the cast for the follow-up of 2014’s ‘Godzilla’. The untitled sequel also features Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler and is set to arrive in March 2019.

Following the financial success of ‘Trolls’, DreamWorks Animation have already announced plans for a sequel with April 2020 looking like a realistic release date.

Nicholas Hoult has joined Emma Stone in period drama, ‘The Favourite’, directed by The Lobster’s Yorgos Lanthimos. Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz will also feature.

Cara Delevingne and Jaden Smith are set to star together in romantic drama, ‘Life In A Year’. Expect a similar product to ‘A Fault In Our Stars’ (and not just because Delevingne’s in it).

The Transformers spin-off, ‘Bumblebee’ has a director. Travis Knight, responsible for animation ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ will be in charge of this one.

Three huge trailers dropped this week including the latest looks at ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’, ‘POTC: Salazar’s Revenge’ and ‘Alien: Covenant’. Click on the Latest Trailers tab to take a look.
