13 Huge Movies Still To Come In 2017

It has been a stellar year for film so far and we’re not even half way through it. As we approach the summer months, there’s a typical onslaught of superhero movies as Marvel and DC go head to head, Christopher Nolan’s latest feature drops, and there are a whole host of explosive blockbusters to sink your teeth into. Here are 13 of the movies that I am most looking forward to in the coming months:

Baywatch – 29th May

Hear me out with this one. It will probably be one of the most offensive movies of the year but with Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron headlining, there is sure to be plenty of action and comedy involved and if you’re looking for an easy summer watch, this is it. Based on the popular 90’s series, the pair uncovers a local criminal plot which threatens the future of the Bay. The man behind Horrible Bosses, Seth Gordon, directs.

Wonder Woman – 1st June

DC will seriously have to step it up this year following the drab releases of Suicide Squad and Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. The latter of those two gave us a glimpse of Gal Gadot portraying Wonder Woman and there’s a lot of hope that her stand-alone movie will be the one that puts DC back on the map for the right reasons as we discover the back story of how Diana Prince becomes Wonder Woman. Patty Jenkins directs with Chris Pine and Robin Wright also starring.

Baby Driver – 28th June

Edgar Wright returns to directing after concluding his Cornetto series (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End) in 2013 with this crime caper, Baby Driver. Ansel Elgort plays Baby, a young getaway driver at his best when listening to music, who finds his life is at risk when he is coerced into working for a crime boss and taking on a hopeless task. Jon Hamm, Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx head an impressive cast and early reviews have come back positive for what should be one of this summer’s biggest hits.

Spider-Man: Homecoming – 7th July

For me, Marvel went up another level last year with the release of Captain America: Civil War. We briefly got to see Tom Holland donned as the web slinger in that, and he gets his own movie this summer as the latest Avenger is nurtured by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) whilst trying to balance that with his normal life. Throw in Michael Keaton as The Vulture terrorising New York City and old Spidey really does have himself tangled in a web.

War for the Planet of the Apes – 14th July

Though it hasn’t yet been officially confirmed, it’s widely believed this will be the conclusion to the Apes trilogy which sees another tussle between humans and their evolutionary predecessors led by Caesar. Dawn director Matt Reeves returns for this one with Woody Harrelson taking on the apes as the ruthless Colonel leading the humans.

Dunkirk – 21st July

This doesn’t need much bigging up. Christopher Nolan, the man behind the Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception, returns to direct this World War II epic following the heroic evacuation of 330,000 allied troops as they were pressurised by Germans descending on the beaches of Dunkirk. Nolan is renowned for his huge blockbusters, and with such an impressive British cast including the likes of Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and Kenneth Branaugh, expect to be blown away once again.

Atomic Blonde – 11th August

Perhaps one that many people wouldn’t have heard about but one that they will have wished they had as Charlize Theron plays a female Bond-like MI6 agent when she is sent to Berlin during the Cold-War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent as well as to track down a list of double agents. Stylish combat scenes, witty quips and plenty of blood is what to expect from director David Leitch (who is also directing next year’s Deadpool 2). James McAvoy and John Goodman also star.

The Dark Tower – 18th August

This looks to be one of the biggest adventure fantasies of the summer as Idris Elba plays a gun-slinger, roaming the old west in an alternative universe in pursuit of the man in black (Matthew McConaughey) in order to keep the real world safe. Stylish and explosive, this one also looks like one of the coolest movies of the year based on the trailer alone, mainly due to its two leading actors.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle – 22nd September

Matthew Vaughn’s graphic spy flick, Kingsman: The Secret Service blew people away in 2014 and as a result, its sequel is much anticipated. Taron Egerton returns and heads an impressive cast following the additions of Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry and Julianne Moore. After their headquarters is attacked, the Kingsman discover a similar organisation in the US and the pair must cooperate in order to take down their common enemy. Expect plenty of bloody carnage in the one.

Blade Runner 2049 – 6th October

Naturally there are some sceptics who are concerned about returning to the much loved original. But everything we know about Blade Runner 2049 suggests that it will do more than justice to the 1982 classic. Denis Villeneuve has proved that he is more than capable director with the successes of Prisoners and last year’s Arrival. Harrison Ford reprises his role as Rick Deckard, with Ryan Gosling and Jared Leto also starring to complete a strong lineup. The latest trailer for this one dropped this week and it doesn’t look like those sceptics are going to be disappointed.

Thor: Ragnarok – 27th October

The recent trailer release raised a number of questions for the latest chapter in Thor. The third Marvel film of the year shows Thor as a slave warrior, fighting Hulk, with short hair and on top of that, Jeff Goldblum seems to be at the helm of all of this. Cate Blanchett plays the villainous Hela in this one and Benedict Cumberbatch (as Doctor Strange) is also set to make some form of an appearance. Thor: Ragnarok is set to be the penultimate movie before our favourite heroes team up again in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War.

Justice League – 17th November

Justice League is DC’s answer to Marvel’s Avengers, where Batman seeks to build a team of superhumans including Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg to take on a greater threat. B vs S director, Zack Snyder, is at the helm of this one (which won’t fill too many people with confidence) with Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and Henry Cavill teaming up once again.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi – 15th December

Whether you’re a Star Wars fan or not, there’s no doubt that 2015’s The Force Awakens was a thoroughly enjoyable watch and one that brought the franchise back from the dark Jar-Jar Binks era of the noughties. In the latest chapter, Rey and Finn return on their journey alongside Luke Skywalker, who we got a small glimpse of in The Force Awakens. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Mark Hamill all feature again, with Looper director Rian Johnson taking charge of this one.

All release dates are UK based
